railway began. The committee also decided that it was advisable to post* pone any demonstration for the present. A petition ha vjiig been presented to the Governor praying that the Lyttelton Orphanage may be constituted a separate institution, the opponents of the proposal are now circulating a counter petition, asking that the insti tution may remain under the control of the Charitable Aid Board. The University Council, in view of the probability of the Government appointing a Commission to enquire into the condition of the pastoral tenants of the Crows, having decided to take no action at present iv granting their tenants relief. The Taiaroa relief fund committee lias been notified that Irvine, who was supposed to be single, left a widow and two children in Liverpool. Doreen and Diamante resulted in a decree nisi being granted with costs against the co-respondent, the mother to have the custody of the youngest child till seven years old, and )jthe father the custody of the other tro.
