The Sandhurst correspondent of the Melbonrne Argus, writing on Jim* 28, «ays : " The returns as to the work done and the results of the mining industry in this district for the pant half year are somewhat below those of the first half of the year 1885, hut an improvement can well Vw expected in the ensuing half- From January to June, 1885, 4h> quantity of «o j d rawed in the district amounted to 106,8800z, while for the six months this year only 87,9470z were reported. The dividends, as may ta expected, were also lower, being £157.293 in 1885, and £96, 334 3s 4d for the period uuder revit-w Fortunately, however, the calls for 1886 were below those of 1885, the totals being— lßßs, £68.581 16s 5.1, against, 1896, £65,505 17s sd. The *otals for the lust six months in 1885 were also better than those of this half The fall'ng off in the yields in a large nuraher of companies is noticeable. For instance, United Devonshire obtained sufficient gold during the first six months last year to enable them to pay away in dividends €44. 6<M), whilst this year they only had 31200z of sold, and paid £6300 in dividends. This alone more than makes up the difference bet we en tindividends of this half year and the last. Included in this h<ilf y< mi's list is that of the New Bet hi \> (Mal-louK which paid away £23 250. so tin' i •■ Sandhurst alone the falling* ff is com siderable. A number of other leading rompanies have als>o failed to s»ivp dividends.
