(fkom our own cokkehpondknt. ) Dunedin, 9. The officrat drew the Judge's attention to a case in which the bill of costs of the petitioning creditor amounted to £43, while the whole value of the estate in his hands amounted to only £50. Mr Justice Williams said he. could not fix the costs by a definite settle, even if over the £20 mentioned in the Act, as the amount depended on the work and other circumstances. In the case before him he made an order for £20, including dishnrsments. j The Evening Star says it has good grounds for believing that there is no truth in the rumor ns to the direct steamers making Wellington their first port of call. In connection with this the Wellington Post says : — The rumor did no* appear in our columns, but on seeing ! it we made enquiries on the subject, j and found that there was no authority for this statement, the proposal never having been formally marie to, or iv tended by either of the shipping) companies. A suggest ion was, how* ever, we learn, recently offered by a j shareholder to a director of the Shipping Company that a considerable expenditure might he saved by such a course being adopted.
