The Intelligent officer of the American warship Mohican forwards the following to the press in compliance with instructions leceived in July from Admiral McCauley ; — The American corvette MoJiM_W, C_muiaMder Pay, wade a special

trip to an island formed by volcanic action | since October last. At a distance of 15 milea steam could be discerned rising in the air above tbe former site of the Falcon shoal. On arriving at tbe spot the Mohican steamed round, taking bearings of the position and sketches and photographs of its contour and appearance. The island is of a circular shape, 230 feet high, and a mile and a half wide. It has a steaming crater oh the east side. To the extreme left there is a noticeable wreath of unnke. On taking soundings good anchorage was found on the north side of the island. Tbe longitude is 157 degrees 20 minutes VV. and the latitude 20 degrees 20 minutes S. The island is situated 48 miles N.N.W., of Nukalofa. The impression conveyed by its appearance was that the bed of the ocean had been uplifted out of the water.
