The Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. MONDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1886.
There, will shortly be issued from the Government printing office, Wellington, under the authority of the Hon. the Minister of Mines, a Hand-book on NewZealand Miniug. As it is the first publication of the kind yet attempted in the Colony under official sanction, much information is needed in reference to the mining industry which cannot be furnished by the Departments. In order to obtain this, circulars have been forwarded to the managers of oompanies throttgh* out the Colony, enclosing printed form* to be filled in. As the preparation of the book is now well advanced the return of these forms, duly filled in, is required at. the earliest possible date. The Hon. Mr Larnach deserves the warmest praise for the much more than mere, official interest which he has throughout shown in regard to goldfields' matters generally, and he is to be especially thanked for the initiation of the important work he has now in hand. The furnishing of the fullest information by those in a position to supply it becomes a duty not only to the district, but to the Colony. During last session the mining industry was frequently referred Jto in the House in a manner which showed how little is known of its magnitude or results. The publication of Mr Larnach V Hand-book will dispel much of the ignorance now prevailing on the subject, and in this task he should receive the prompt and cordial co-opera-tion of managers and directors of companies, and indeed all classes of persons on the goldfields. The Rev. Mr Innes- Jones will deliver a lecture in the Church of England Sunday School, on Thursday evening next, illustrative of the beauties of Scottish scenes. He will be aided by a large number of splendid photographs, and transparencies well worih seeing. It has been decided to hold a miner's ball at the Public Hall, Boatman's, on Friday, 15th instant, in aid of the ' funds of the Reefton Hospital. There is no doubt the miners will combine to make the affair a thorough success. In accordance with the suggestion made by a number of residents, it has been decided to repeat the amateur performance to raise funds to enable the Reefton Cadets to proceed to Greymouth, to take pnrt in the review there on the oth 'November. The programme for the occasion will oomprise the farce "Whitebait at Greenwich," Christy's Minstrels, and the whole concluding with a screaming negro farce entitled "The Coming Man." New songs and choruses will be introduced, 1 making altogether a capital evening's entertainment, which, together v.ith the object for which it is given, should ensure a crowded house on the occasion. We received the programme last night, but too late for publication to-day. ,It will appear iirour Wednesday's issue. We have been requested t<> state tha+ a full rehearsal will be held in the Oddfellow's Hall this evening, at 8 o'clock. It's a well known skying that " The Devil's children have the Devil's luck." An instance of the tralh of this is afforded In the case of a well known West Coast limb of the Jaw, who, when in Wellington a short time ago, purchased 1,600 Globe shares for LI. At the time of the transaction the shares bud no market val-
ue, but mark tho sequel. ' These 1,5.00 shares entitled the holder to an additional 750 shares, or thereabouts, as his proportion of the forfeited shares in the hands of the company, bringing the number of ■hares up to 2250. For these he received on Saturday last an offer of 4s 6d per share for the entire parcel, but declined to accept it. L6OO for the outlay of LI. Not a bad pot-shot that. The funny part of the story is that the gentleman who sold the 1,500 shares is also a member of thelegal profession. This fact rather weakens the force of the saying with which we started, but that is neither here nor there. It has hitherto been the practice in the Resident magistrate's Court when a solicitor was a party to an action not to allow him fees such as he would have obtained had he appeared for a layman. In Christchurch) says the Lyttelton Times) Mr Russell made an effort to convince Mr Beetham that a solicitor is entitled to all such fees, consistently with the idea that the solicitor and the party in action are the same person. That is to say, though he cannot claim costs for instructing himself, he has a right to be paid for the exercise of his special knowledge as a solicitor (which it is his privilege to possess and trade with) that he devotes to his own case instead of employing another solicitor. The authority upon which Mr Russell relied was the case of the London Scottish Bene6t Building Society v. Chorley, reported in "Law Journal," Vol. 53, Queen's Bench Division, pages 272 and 551. Mr Beetham said that as the matter was one of importance, as aflecting a change in the practice of the Court, he would consult with other resident magistrates before giving Mb decision. W. J.
