Mr Blanchard, the French geologist, is of opinion that the recent volcanic disturbances in New Zealand confirm his own theory respecting the recent subsidence of a southern continent during the later geological periods. He regards the New Zealand Archipelago and the adjacent islands as the remnants of such a continent, or at least of an extensive region which existed during a comparatively recent period. He says that as far back as 1884 he prodicted fresh convulsions there, and he considers the pvent as au jilustration of the still more violent outbursts which occurred ages ago.
