SECOND DAY. The day again opened gloriously finein fact rather too fine to be pleasent, the heat during many ht>urs of the day being very trying. The delightful freshness of the verdure of the course, however, offered a grateful promenade, and the shades of the neighboring trees wooed • perspiring humanity to temporary ren and shelter. The games on tbe course were again numerous and well patronised. None of these appeared to come within the prohibitory limits of the law, and tbe amusements were indulged in by young and old with infinite gnsto and freedom. The following are the particulars of the different cv* nts :— District Havmoap. 30 soys ; second horse, 5 «nw. 1 J miles. Mr Smith's Gallant, 6yrs, Bst 81b. The public, however, were slow in putting their mmey on the tofstlisator, and it was not until the horses weVe actually nut that the hacking commenced in *eejrnest. In a very few minutes the whole of the space around the machino was blocked^ with anxious investors, the rush being quite unpre cedented and a couple of stewards had to be told off to preserve something like order and tfjstem in getting to the aischine. It wee generally whispered that the race was arranged for a "chick in " for Cardigan, British 1 ion only to win in the event oft either of the other two horses showing U.o much foot, and the rumor was confirmed in some way by the fact that at the last moment the Greymouth contingent planked L6O in one lump on Cardigan in the totalisator. After some little difficulty Mr Dick sent the horses away on lets! terms. Perkins at once set to work at a bursting pace and for the first half mfle kept on Cardigan's quarter. Miss Bamum following a 'length behind and British Lion six lengths in the rear. In this order the horses passed the sfand for the first time, but at the completion of the first round Perkins had worked up level with Cardigan, the other jinnee still following in the order given. <)n leaving the straight iv the last round Perkins showed an improved ptmition, and half way from home had obtained a good neck's lead. " Perkins has it," " Perkins has it," went up from the crowd in tones of frantic exultation. This, however, was very short lived, for "Sprightly." seeing that Cardigan was done, brought up the Lion with one dash, ran through the field as though they were only cantering, and entered the straight with the lead of a neck, which at the post he increased to two lengths, Miss Bamum following three lengths bad, and Cardigan a length behind.
