Most of the fish caught in this river were in very good condition but very small. There was on view in Mr W. J. Alpe’s shop, in High Street, yesterday, a trout weighing'6ib, caught in the Avon by Mr R. Rees. At Temuka and Winchester some capital baskets have been taken with the fly. The Temuka River is a little low and clear, but simply teeming with fish, and several of those caught have proved in remarkably good condition. Amongst a small lot taken by Mr Nicholas with the minnow was a very pretty fish of 51b. Mr W. Binley took thirty-two fair fish in the course of about five hours’ fishing, the largest being 2,Jib. Mr J. Findlay has fished consistently since the opening day with fair fortune. Messrs Ferguson and Aspisall and Sir W. Blundon have also had several decent baskets. At Winchester some good sport has been had with fontinalis. The favourite flies are the governor, March brown, claret hackle and red spider. But little minnow fishing has yet been done. This season there is likely to be good sport in the Orari.
