The last London police reports have this:—A young bride asked the magistrate if she was obliged to do her brother-in-law's washing. He lived with them, and her husband said she must wash for both. The magistrate said it was perfectly absurd to suppose that she was compelled to do her brother-in-law's washing, fie sent an officer to remonstrate with the husband, who probably, though it is not so stated, "remonstrated" later on with his wife.

A {lower or grass sandwich is said to bo a veritable "madrigal of gastronomy." It is English, and altogether delightful. A roll of fresh butter, which is a great absorbent of odors, is wrapped in a clean linen napkin, laid iii a basket of clean enr grass, or roses, or violets, covered with the same, and set away for several hours. At the expiration of that time it will emerge from its seclusion redolent of new mown bay. of fragrant rose, or dainty violets. This is then spread evenly on thin sliees of delicate white bread a day old. pressed closely together, and out in strips or diamonds A rose sandwich for a rose fete is a morse! that Titania herself would have welcomed. "Dying of a rose in sympathetic pain" is not in the running with it.

Tn onlm* to test the efficiency of infantry tiro ;it low ranges under certain circumstances, an experiment was made in Switzerland by firing from the hamlet of "Roplands. at an altitude of 3700 feet, at a surface of snow, about a mile and a quarter off as the crow flies.at the foot of the Mont do" Baulmos The target was a rectangle IGS feet wide by 200 feet deep, sloping at. an angle of 10 dog., and was marked at the four corners by flags, and reudored more conspicuous by a piece of black cloth. S feet by 10 feet, spread at the base of the rectangle. Fourteen medium shots wore told off to lire independently a total of 500 carefully aimed shots within sixteen minutes, between 2.1 r» and 2.31 p.m., the weather being very fine, with bright sunshine and a dry ;ind perfectly calm atmosphere. The thermometer indicated 20 Fahrenheit. The snow was hard frozen, smooth, and free from any mark, and the slightest gra>:e of the surface was distinctly visible, so that every hit could be dearly traced, it was found that out of the 500 shots. :;:iS .or 07 per cent., had hit the target, besides twenty which had struck above, and twentysix which had struck below the rectangle, within a radius of about 30 feet. The remaining shots were found to have struck within a hour 100 yards, either short or over the target, whilst a very few had deviated sideways.— "La France Militairo."

One uf tho "Times'" correspondents engaged in the Naval ro"ano"avres wrote on 28t!i July:—'T deeply !v«rri tt > have to recoi'd the death by drowning of two officers of the Hermione--the first lieutenant. Mr Augustus R. r. Warren, and the senior assistant engineer. Mr Ji>hn P. Good. !t appears that, about nine o'clock this morning, when the fleet was off the Shannon. Mr Good foil overboard. and Lieutenant Warren immediately jumped overboard to his rescue. The fleet was steaming- at 14 knots at the time. Tlv sea. though rough, was not running heavily, but was lumpy end loppy under a fresh following- breeze. The lifebuoy was let go, and a boat was lowered without do.ay, the Hermione hauling out of line, an I altering course so as to stand by her bout. After making a careful search., however, the Hermione signalled that both men were lost. The circumstances in which Mr Good fell overboard have not yet been reported, but no further" b'-fo.-raation is needed to illustrate the I. ••••• ■■'■ c act of self-sacri-fice by which Li; ut'.mint Warren lost his life. The instinctive comradeship and tho unhesitating courage winch prompt such an act are some of the noblest attributes of the navel service, and, i though we cannot but mourn their con-, sequences in this particular case, and offer a respectful sympathy to the friends of the lost, yet even the most deeply bereft must feel consolation in the reflection that both men have died in the service nf their country, and that such a death as that of Lieutenant Warren is pre-eminently worthy of the noble service which it illustrates and adorns."

A curious ease of mimicry lias been noticed on the coast near .Manilla, in the Philippine Inlands. Tho seeds of a beau fall anion- quartz pebbles, and so closely resemble them in shape, size, color, lustre, hardness, and stratification as to be distinguishable from them only by a very close examination. The beans range from a third of an inch to an inch in size, and vary greatly in shape also, some resembling well rounded bench pebbles, and others mimic pebbles that have been broken across. The color varies from dark to light drab, some with a greenish tinge?, while others resemble pebbles of chalcedony or crystallised quartz. Nearly all show a series of dark brands, suggestive of stratification. All are hard, and clink when shaken together.
