PERSONAL.

Lieut. H. Hatchwell, R.N.R, son of Capt. Hatchwell, manager of N.Z. Shipping Co., LytteltoD, has been on a visit to Queens-town. Dr Alex Stewart returned to Queenstown Last evening from Dunedin, where he has ben attending the Medical Confer'nce.

Regimental Se-g ant-Major T. F. Richards, who for the past three years has. been in sol; control oi the Sick and Wounded Department in Invercargill, has resigned this post in order to enter th • office of the scene-, tary of the Repatriation Department, Christchurch. Sergt.-Major Ri;!ards> is the eldest son of Mis T. F. Richards, Queenstown. At the last meeting of th/' Southland Education Board the following appointments of district interest were made:—Car bona: Tempo ay sole teacher, Annie Ranee, Gars ton: Sob teacher, Aubrey Witting. Qu:eustown: First assistant, Georgina Tait.

Lieuts. Richardson and Xolan, B,X.V.R. paid a visit to Queenstown last week. Thea- officers were in the volunteer moor boat patrol which undertook the hazardous work of serving around; the English coast during the- war peroid. Last Friday afternoon the Mayor, A. Simson, Esq., with the members 01 the Committee visited the Public school to present to Master Alex. Salmond the gold medal donated for most progress during the year 1919. The young scholar, who goes to Dunedin to continue his education at the Otago Boys High School, was congratulated on his success and at the same tim' he received advice for the future. The Headmaster, r plying on the pupii's behalf, thanked Mr Simson for his continued interest in school af< fairs anil assured him that both pupils and teacher appreciate hi- liberality. Among our week-end visitors was iMiss Watki.i, who along \\i:h another Home lady, Miss Girdler, has been sent out to New Zealand by the Imperial Government to inquire into prospects for young women in England de-irons of enteiing the different industries in this country. We learn that the young women whom the Imperial Government desire to assist are those who volunteered for service in connection with the army and who have ha I live years special training for their work. The mission of these ladies is to sjee whether thes ■ women can be advantageously absorbed. None would be sent- out unless they were assured 01 being able to earn a living wage immediately on their arrival, The Manufacturers' Association in Dunedin are taking the matter up as the question of labour in local industries at p.esent is a serious matter. Dr Alex. Stewart, who has leeon resident in the Wakatipu district for the past nine and a-haif years, has disposed of his practice to Dr W. A. Anderson, Dunedin. The news of our popular inedieols departure will be received with great regret by the people of Queenstown and the district where he has laboured wiih such conspicuous success and won for himself not only universal respect but also the high esteem of all classes of the conn munity. Dr Stewart has proved times and again his skill as a physician, and his ability is \\i lely recognised among the profession throughout Otago and Southland, and, indeed as far afield as Auckland. Few medical men can find time to take part in public affairs, but despile .the fact of the full calll his professional duties made upon him, Dr Stewart has proved himself public-spirited enough to make tkue to assist at local gathers ings of many kinds. Chief in inSnd, we have patriotic affairs, which have engaged much of the doctor's valuable time. As for the individual soldier, he has done a very great deal to guard the interests of the men, to say nothing of the large amount Of gratuitous professional service he has lenderel tlrm. It is worthy of mention that on the call being made by the Government, for doctors to serve at the Front Dr Stewari resigned the posiiion of medical superintendent at the Lake County Hospital in order to offer himself for the work. We understand that Dr Stewart has been offered a lucrative appoiutm nt in Mel bourne. Dr Anderson, his successor, is not unknown in the district, having on more than one occasion acted at locum tenons for Dr Stewart. The peopl' of AVakatipu will join in wishing hiim succe-s in the practice, which he will enter upon on Bth April. Mr B. H. Turton returned to Queenstown on Saturday evening last.
