MINERS AND "GO SLOW"
WHAT THE FEDERATION AIMS AT. The Millerfcon miners (writes a correspondent of the Nelson Colonist.) hold a ballot on Wednesday to decide whether they should secede ■from the Miners' Federation, and .by a two to tone maiority decided in favor of remaining in the ranks. Up to the present time Mil.lerton and a sihall North .Island colliery have been the only mines in New Zealand to refuse to r.dopt the "go slow" policy in order to restrict the coal output. Now, however, tho decision- of the Millerfcon men to remain in the Federation means that they, too, have decided to go alow. Tho idea of the Federation in adopting this policy is to force the mine-owners to confer with Government representatives regarding the rates paid for hewing Tho miners claim that tho wagos^hsve;; ;not '■'; increased .^pr^tit^ tionately■ \vifell the/incr^as^;-m.-: l .fc'he,:i-e^ tail price of etoHlj ajadVthe^hofie^mfc their "go-slow' V policy c • will compel the Government either to bring, pressure to bear on the mine-owners* to increase tho ratos." or else to take over tlie mines altogether. At any rate<s, the outnut of coal is bound to be seriously affected, and there is no doubt, that in the near future some drastic action will be taken by the Government to increase the supply. .
