A letter received from a Wellington 'resident ; who visited "the scene of thermal activity at Wainiangu states that the noise niade by the geyser could be heard some miles away, and that by the time the party reached Earthquake Flat they could see flashes of flame ascending skyward. Weather-boards -from the destroyed; accommodation house could be seen a mile away from, their original position, and the whole place* had the appearance .of being 'covered with cement. Rainbow Mountain, some miles behind the 'hostel, .. was all cohered Avith nnid, and trees cvervv.'here were flattened down. While the visitors were there the geyser was very active, and threw up a fine photo a distance of five or six hundred feet.
