Mr J. H. Cock,, of Nelson, received a cable, message on Thursday' stating that his son, Lieutenant J. H. Cock, of the scouting branch, of the Royal Flying Corps, is now in France.

Mr W. ;E.,Gascoigne notifies to-day that, owing to reasons of indifferent health, he is unable to accede to a general request to offer himself for reelection as a Borough Councillor.

Mr J. Liddell Harris, of Ligar Bay, Nelson (formerly, auctioneer for the' N.-Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. in Blenheim), is on a visit to Marlborough, accompanied by Mrs Harris. ■ Mr and Mrs Harris drove from Takaka via Tophouse and Hillersdan, and have been visiting friends in the Awatere.

While-at Kauakanaia on his tour of inspection, Mr D. A. Strachan, one of the Hawke's Bay Education Board's inspectors, met with a nasty accident. He was riding ,a restive horse, which threw him, and he was dragged a short distance. Mr Strachan received a severe scalp wound, and as the result of the accident returned to Napier.

Mr Sydney Bull, of the VancouverFiji Sugar Company, .who was given extended leave of absence in order to come to Blenheim to enlist, has been accepted for active service. While in Fiji Mr Bull had charge of thi-ee of the Company's estates, on. which several hundred Indian laborers were employed; ;

The death is announced from Wei-'' lington of Mr Cuthbert G. Peart, formerly of Nelson. The late Mr Peart was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne, and served his apprenticeship to the engineering there. He joined his father in the sawmilling business in the Scottish Highlands, and later spent seven years in Sweden in the same.business. He then went to Nelson, where he and his father started a flour mill. On his father's death Mr Peai't started business as an engineer, and continued in this till a few years ago, when, on account, of failing health, he sold out. He was a valued member ' of St./ John's Methodist Church, and for some time superintendent of the Sunday School. ; He leaves a. widow,l and two sons, Mr Joseph Peart (of Wellington), and Mr Cuthbert Peart (\vho* is serving at the front). V^-t the meeting of the Wairau Road Board, held yesterday, Mr R. F. Goulter—who has been chairman of that body continuously for 16 years, with the exception: of an interval of one year) during which he paid a visit to England—tendered his resignation from the position. All the members spoke in glowing terms of the able and courteous manner in which Mr, Goulter had throughout his long term of office carried out the duties attached to the chair. It was remarked that the close interest he had consistently taken in the affairs of the Board, his intimate knowledge and personal observation of every portion of the district, and his absolute fairness arid impartiality had made the work of the members run along with complete smoothness and success. After pressing Mr Goulter to continue m office, the members accepted the resigaation with niuch regret, and passed the following resolution unanimously: -- "That the Board place on record its high appreciation of Mr Goultm-'s services to the Board duiing his long term of 36 years as chairman of. the Board, and its- sincere regret at his determination to resign." Mr Go'tUer retired from the chairmanship as he has taken up his residence temporarily in the Hawke's Bay district, where lie has acquired lar.^e property interests, and did not think he would be able to give to the responsibility the time and attention that he considers due to it. He is not, however, resigning from the 80-ud, and will pay periodical visits tc Blenheim to keep in touch with lae:ii affairs. He has generally been recognised as one of the ablest of luoal-^orerning chairmen, and it :vas customary to elect him to preside over conferences of local governing bodies. For many years he represented the Marlborossgii County Council in the New Zealand Counties Association. Mr G. G.
