SINKING OF ALNWJCK CASTLE

LONDON, Marcji .30. The Alnwick Castle was -torpedoed 'iat.'-dawn, amidships. The explosion Broke the vessel's back, and 'the gnnship, which within 14 minutes dived bows first iuto the sea, the ait-mast snapping and falling forward as sho plunged downward. Her boats pxill•ed away for SOOyards, when tiio submarine appeared. She was 350 ft. long, and her crew of 30 or 40 crowded her deck, enjoying the spectacle. The sea was strewn witli wroi-k.-ige for a mile. Five boats kept together tall day. A favorable wind sprang ••up, and sails were rigged. Many of the pnssfngers and crew were attired .scantily, some wearing only pyjamas. *Ono boat -contained a French lady with a month-oJd baby. Rations of biscuits and tmily beef were served out. During the night -yhe boats parted. A bitterly cold sea vo-v. <)ne of the crew Avas crushed betiveoH his boat and the rescuing steamer, sind was killed outright.
