ANZAC DAY
ATTITUDE OF THE RETAILERS.
The following • correspondence has passed between the Town Clerk and the Blenheim Retailers' Association, which held a meeting last night:— j The Town Clerk wrote on April 12: "I am directed by his Worship the Mayor to ask your Association to consider the question of observing a halfholiday on Monday, 23rd inst., being the day appointed by the Government to observe as Anzac Day,.and for tho observance of which arrangements will be made at the public meeting to be held at tho Council Chambers on Monday evening next, the 16th inst,,, at 8 o'clock. It is suggested that Monday afternoon should be a half-holiday in addition to the usual Wednesday statutory half-holiday? His' Worship the Mayor cordially invites the members of your Association to be present at the public meeting, next Monday evening, when arrangements for observing the day will be made. The public meeting is convened by the Mayor associated with St. George's Society." The secretary of the Retailers' Association has replied as follows: "The Retailers' Association will accept the suggestion of his Worship the Mayor re Anzac Day in the event of the 23rd being chosen, but' strongly protests against the alteration of the day to the »23rd of April, being of opinion that the day of the commemoration, April 25th, as first arranged, should-be adhered to, and not be interfered with for any subsidiary reasons."
The letter' of ■ reply is in the terms of p. resolution passed by the Retailers' ■ Association.
