DEATH OF IHAKARA TUKUMARU.
We regret to record the death of Ihakara Tukumaru, the well-known Foxton chief. He had been ailing for some months past, his constitution rapidly breaking up. He expired at his pa, near Foxton, on Tuesday last, about 1 p.m. He was a staunch friend to the Europeans, and was universally respected. We understand an application has been made to the Colonial Secretary to permit his remains to be interred in the old cemetery, near Loudon's store, but the result was not known up to last evening. We hear he is to be buried today. A native belonging to his hapu informs us that the deceased chief was about 70 years old at the time of his death, but others inform as that his age was about tea years younger than that mentioned.
