Shannon.
(From our own correspondent.) [illegible] things in Shannon are pretty lively at present, all things considered Road work, bush coming down, and new buildings being erected. We can boast of a new bakery, opposition, of course, erected by Mr Richards, who also owns land in the vicinity. People in Foxton seem to go in for plenty of diversion over their weddings, There are a few here contemplating matrimony, now that you folks have set the ball rolling. There is some talk of the hotel here changing hands, but as yet there are no definite particulars. The Queen's Birthday was kept up here by a dance, held in the schoolro m, given by a Mr Rhodes. Every one seemed to enjoy themselves very well in spite of the rather severe rainfall which occurred during the festivities. I hear that, during the winter, there is likely to be several different entertainments, such as concerts, dances, &c, held here. We wish the promoters every success. As there are no less than six pianos in the township there should be no lack of talent. Our school is every Sunday quite transformed Mr Raine, on occasions, kindly rides over and discourses to very fair congregations. But whether there is anything in a name or not, there is always a great downpour whenever he comes here. Still I hope we have got over the superstitious age by this time. The place has been canvassed in aid of a Church, but of late we have heard no more concerning it. As for the school building, at present the accommodation is very inadequate, and an application has gone in to the Education Board suggesting enlargement, there being no less than sixty pupils on the roll.
