The Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) Suivant a verite. MONDAY, JANUARY 8, 1883. IMMIGRATION AND FINANCE.
We purpose making a few further remarks m connection wr h the opinions of the London Times with regard to the action of the Colonies concerning loans and immigration, Is the London limes not aware of the palpable errors committed m the past by indiscriminate immigration ? The kind of immigrants that will do the Colo ay and themselves good by emigrating, is just the class that England does not want to part with. So lotig as New Zealand abstained from further borrowing, and brought out at its own expense the scum of the larger cities, the refuse of the population, and became an asjlum and home for the outcasts of society, and the scourings of the jails, workhouses, and unions of the Old Country, the Thunderer of Printing House Square would be content. We have room for thousands of immi grants, but they must be of the right sort, or none at all. We have a vast area "that needs bringing under cultivation, but paupers and ne'er-do* wel's are not the people to achieve work of that kind. With regard to the Colonial loans we may state that wo should not be surprised if the Victorian Loai. hung fire, while the New Zealand Loan was successfully floated, The adininis* tration of. our affairs is now based on a frugal, provident system, and Already tht> beneficial effects of the new regime are apparent, and we venture to say will be more so to the English capitalist than is generally iealized. , '
