There appears to be some foundation for the statement that the French have taken (.-ossession of tho New Hebrides, but the ncbunl (act has been emphatioa'ly denied by the Fremh Consul here, it appears, from information communis cated from a private source to the Sydney Morning Herald, that the inhabitants ot Noumea went to the Governor m a body to request him to take steps to annex ths New Hebrides, The Government steamer L' Bstrees, which was waiting to take her departure for the Loyalty Group, was at once despatched under sealed orlers to the New Hebrides, and the Bruat, under sealed orders, to Brisbane, it is said, to wire Home for instructions. The Bruat, aft-r eaving Brisbane, returned to New Caledonia.
