THE IL&-FATED WAITARA.
(Per Mail Steamer.) (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, July 21. The Waitara, which* was m collision with the Hurunia, sank m two minutes. The Huruni's boats resoaed 16 persons straggling m the wate*. Among these \ was a lady, saloon passenger, to whom a sailor, who was also Bared had given his life-belt. All the second class and steerage passengers were lost. The captain of the Waitara was dragged on board the Hurunui by aid of ropes. The Hnrnnni strnck the Waitara end on, just m front of the saloon, on iha starboard side. The survivors state that no crash was heard, bat that the side of the Waitara gave way like cardboard, More of the passengers might have been sated had a barque and steamer seen near by heeded th)i Waitara's signals, of distress,.
