Story of a Shell.

-o ■ Apropos of Lord Chailes Beresford, of the Condor, whose questionable exploit with Mace was recently cabled, it is said that, on landing after the bombardment of Alexandria, he picked up an unexploded shell at Fort Marabout and sent it home as a present to the Prince of Wa'es. Had he knqwn what would have happened, he would, no doubt, have left the missile where it was for the benefit of the Egyptians. As it was, however, he sent it home, and forwarded it to the Henry Rifls Barrel Company to have it cut through and polished. The Com pany gave it to cne of their workmen to operate upon . This man, although he protested that hf was afraid, was ordered to clean the ehell out. No sooner had he commenced than the musile burst, and seriously injured him. The man thereupon sued the Company, under the EmployersLiability Act, for damages, and recovered £268 through the County Court. The defendants appealed against the decision, and the case came on be- ( fore Justices .Denman and Hawkins. These learned authorities, after healing the evidence, upheld the decision of the Court below. Tbe Company has therefore to pay a considerable ■''■ amount for this unfortunate shell, which might have gone off harmlessly m Egypt.
