Thisueems to be the latest phase of the relißious instruction movement m Melbourne. The thmg seems almost incredible, yet we have it upon the unexceptionable testimony c.f the Bishop of Melbourne. Giving evidenoe before the Education Commission the bishop Ba^ . One of the most esteemed and respected clergymen m my dioeest— probably the most eminent now taking duty m the church— went to one of the principal schools of the city to give religious instruction. He called, upon the clusb to read a passage of Sctipture. They read it. He then asked them to close their books, and they closed them with a vengeance I They shut the books and then shied tbem at hi* head. Not ;»1I : the children, but a very considerable proportion tf then.. Vo book hit him, but he said they rained about him on every side and strewed the floor all round hiai.
