DOCTORED BEER.
Beer has never been supposed to have any intimate connection with lumber, but the Northwestern Lumberman asserts that a great deal of ihe beer which is sold is " doctored" with hemlock bark. Immense quantities of hemlock bark are sold to brewers, who use it to give poor beer the appearance and taste of good beer. It 'is regarded as a great discovery because it tan. be mude to take the place to a' certain extent of both malt and hops. It is riot poisonous, but an the other lumJ it contains nothing that ministers to nourishmenr. Ie adds the pungent, bitter taste, and gives the dark reddish colour to the liquid. It would seetu as though the unfortunate beer-drinker were beset with .dangers on all sides, which he could avoid only by slaking his thirst with water. "
