ALARM OF FIRE.
About 1.30 o'clock this afternoon an alarm of fire was raised. It was found that some, shavings m Gillifct's buildings had become ignited, and a formidable conflagration threatened. Captain Bentley, with a number of members of the Brigade, and other citizens, were on the ground, and by diligent bucket drill all danger was quickly averted. The building was m course of alteration, and one of the carpenters had only left it a few seconds before to go to Mr Leavy's. During his absence the alarm was raised. There was a builders' risk and also a general policy of insurance of the former m. the office for which Mr Snelson is agent, and the latter m that lor wh eh Mr Lin ton is agenr. It is likely it will be declared advisable to hold au official inquiry into the circumstances with a view to elicit the probable origin of the tire.
