It is doubtful if the case of sickness on the steamer Rome is really smallpox. The 1 Natives had a war-dance on a small scale m the Square this afteraoon, which was witnessed by a good many spectators. There- waa-another distribution of food among the Natives to-day. It is supposed that Hayes was effected by the excitement caused through joining the troop, which he. only (lid a day or two before they left for Wellington. The next meeting ("annual) of the Licensing Committee will be on tho 6ih June. Tasman won the Canterbury Easter Handicap, Nonsense second, Hippodamia thii-d. Toe Steeplechase was won by Clarence, Barbary second. The Auckland Handicap was won by Nelson, Rad&mes second, and Fitzhercules, third. The Steeplechase was won by Chandler, New Year second, Billy-go* by*'em third. A warrant is out for the arrest of a Native charged with having assaulted Mr Wollerman m a most improvoked manner, Mr Rush had also his coat torn off his back m the melee. The Ashurst Concert passed off very successfully lust night.
