Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. TUESDAY, JULY 8, 1884. A TIMELY SUGGESTION.
We bespeak for Mr Donald Frase Ran orderly and attentive meeting at Feilding this evening. Mr Fraser is entitled to this even m the stronghold of his opponent. He is no adventurer,or needy Micawber, but a genuine settler, anxious to serve the district m Parliament He is therefore entitled to a fair and respectfnl hearing, and we trust the reception that will be accorded him will not he such as to cause any reflections on the Feilding community. When a candidate comes forward unsolicited, and without any claims whatever on the electorate, his candidature is resented as an unwarrantable insult and outrage to the intelligence of the electors, and he is apt to receive rough treatment m consequence. In such a case the universal verdict is, " Serve him right. He wasn't wanted, and rioir he knows it." • But ia Mr Fras^r's case he has been asked by a considerable section of the electorate to come forward, and however opposed to his candidature many persons may be, be is entitled to expect courteous treatment when addressing public meetings. It will not be creditable to Feilding, or any other place where Mr Fraser. will speak, if meetings are characterised to an objectionable extent by rowdy or indecorous proceedings. Let him have fair play, and an opportunity of making known his views without unseemly interruption, and thus enable the constituency to judge of his merits or demerits. The voice of the electors will be finally pronounced at the poll, till which we bespeak for both candidates the privilege that an Englishman never refuses, viz., Fair play. ;
