The Silverton Mines.
Mr J. P. Garvan, M.P., of Syd - ney, writes to. the Daily Telegraph on the subject of the now celebrated silver mines m the Barrier Ranges, and warns investors and others from being too hasty m forming a judgment of the lasting quality of tho mines. He concludes thus : — On the whole 1 regard Silverton as a place where capital may be legitimately expended with every prospect of very large results, but it must be done with care and judgment. Above all I wi*b to impress upon working miners and men of limited means that is is no good going there m tbe belief that they are goinaj to make fortunes. As very few of the claims taken up aro being worked, and not likely to be for months, and as most of the kno»vn good country has been pegged out, there is hardly any employment for working men of any kind. They were flocking into tbo place almost daily when 1 left ; and I am afraid, if they have a dry season there next summer, there will be some tenible destitution."
