There has been a strong regret manifested m Wanganui (says the Herald) that Mr Johu Stevens was not returned ' for Rangitifcei. Mr Stevens had acquit* ted himself well m his first Parliamentary term, and given proof . of no small measure of political ability. He has not been, treated fairly, butheis by no means shnt out from a political career m the future. Mr Stevens will come again m spite of the strong combination against him, unless indeed Mr Bruce should prove a superior person. Our advice, therefore, to Mr Stevens, is not to be disheartened, but quietly to organise and prepare for another election. The sitting of the Education Board today promised to be a very long one, ; as m addition to the results of the teacher's examinations there will be brought up for consideration the new scholarship and pupil teacher regulations. There will also be the question of appointing a teacher for the Foxton School. There are, we (Herald) understand, about 20applicanta 9 of whom are teachers m the Board's employ. These items, with the ordinary business, willl take some time to get through, and it is probable the Board will sit all to-day and a portion of tomorrow as well, the country members having been notified by circular to that effect. The Maid has been scratched for the Melbourne Gup. The first meeting of the Imperial Federation Conference was to have been held yesterday, and Mr Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, was to preside. A notice m bankruptcy will be found elsewhere, of importance to those specially concerned. It is officially notified that the attendance of jurors, witnesses, &c, will not be required at the District Court, The next meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council will bo to-morrow evening, at 7 o clock. j
