Tt has been resolved to erect a furnace at Kaiapoi, with a view ot thoroughly testing the local sand for gla^s-making purposes. Shop-lifting is considerably on the increase m Christchurch. Slops are being taken to start a butter factory m the EUesmere district. Inyebcabgill, July 28. The. Governor, on his arrival, was met at Campbelltown and Invercargill by the Mayors of the respective places, but no special demonstration was made. i■, • CAKTERTon, July 28. The stewards of the Wairarapa Jockey Ciub met on Saturday, and fixed as the date of the Spring Meeting 7th November, the day following the Agricultural and Pastor:«l Show. The pprintf programme includes the Birthday Cup Handicap, of lOOsovs.; Handicap Steeplechase, 100 soys. ; Maiden Stakes, Spring Handicap, and Maiden Steeplechase, of 50 soys. each. Auckland, July 28. The old soldiars m Auckland who took part m the Crimean war are arranging for another reunion. The promoters of the Sunday sacred concert at the Opera House and entertainment at the Rationalistic Association, withdrew their .published charges for admission, relying on a collection. One thousand nine hundred were at the opera house, aud the collection realised £18 10?. The promoters are considerable loners. ; ■
