Died m a Ditch.

The unfortunate man, George Wylley Barnett Anderson, the private tutor who was found dead on the Alfredtown->road, Wairavapa North, some time ago, was most respectably connected, and had himself occupied a good position iv society. His father, whose death was recently notified m the Illustrated London News was Sir Feorge Campbell Anderson, Chief Justice of the Leeward Islands from 1877 to 1880, the holder at various times of several high official positions m the West Indies and Ceylon. "It seems almost incredible," says the Wairarapa Star, " that the aon of so distingushed a man should meet his death through cold and privation m the dark of a frosty night among the deep mud of one of the worst roads m Wairarapa North. The deceased appeal's to have come to this colony with letters of recommendation to the Veu. Archdeacon Stock, but for reasons which that gentleman can possibly explain, poor Anderson applied m vain for admission to the colonial police force, and he succumbed to the dangers incidental to following the genteel but precarious ocpation of a private tutor m an outlaying district. At the age of 44 the man who, but a few years ago, was a captain m the army and a secretary to a Chief Justice, and that Chief Justice his father, died positively 'm the ditch." Such are the ups and downs of colonial life."
