(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) ' Masterton, August 25. The friends of Mr. S $T. McCardle, the defeated candidate fprWairarapa North at the late election, presented him with a purse of 30 sovereigns at the Theatre Royal on Saturday. Steps were also taken towards forming a Liberal Association. Mr McCardle stated that Mr Rolleston had promised him a Beat at the "Waste Lands Board. Inveroabgili., August 25. A boj r named George Woods died yesterday at Mataura from the effects of an accident that happened to him a week ago. He was riding a horse from JMacgibbon and Son's staWes, And m turning the comer of a street fell off, sustaining injuries to his head which rendered him unconscious, m which condition he remained till he died. Richard Howortb, storekeeper at Lowther, was convicted of sly grog selling, and fined £50 and costs, being his second conviction.
