The Recent Floods.
(Woodville JExaminer.) On the toad to the Gorge the Manawatu River had backed up to within about two feet of the road at one or two places. From the limestone cliff the .scene was a terrible one, Messrs Carlile's and Ormond's river-flats being under water; also the large piece of nab bush land, on the opposite bank of the river, leaving m sight only the tops of the trees. Through the flat the river formed three main currents. At the bridge the sight of the mighty torrent sweeping through the narrow channel was a grand one, the water being within two or three feet of the girders, agirnst which the branched trees crashed with terrific force as they swept through,- Several cattle and sheep were, B«e'u. carried down tiie river, and Messrs Carlile and Peebles must have lost several head of cattle. The new wire rope -at the Upper Ferry was swept from its moorings, and the rope at the "Lower Ferry also gave way. The indicator at the (Jorge bridge showed 48 feet at midday on Wednesday, and had peached this height from 6 o'clock <m the previous morning, when the river was only 8 feet deep. It was thus within 7 feet of the "big flood" some four years ago.
