Reinforcements of 70Q men left 1 England for Egypt on August 2§. A despatch from Cairo of the 25th says thai soldiers from Berber report that 386 Egyptian officers and soldier* are in the hands of the rebels* who treat them as slave*. The rebels attempted to capture Ehartpum on ihe 12th, and continued the attack till the Uth,whca General Gordon cleverly out-flanked 1000 of them Many of the rebels J|were killed dtuing the engagement. On the 23th General Wolseley appointed General Earl to the; jJS&iliou of second in command of the Gordon relief expedition . Geneirat Earl *s brigade was ordered to move ao as ta make the second cataract early in October .^> Paris, August ,28. Figaro comments on the increase of British troops in Egypt from 6000 !to 14,0.00, and says : ." France keeps 50,000 in Algeria and Tunis who are ! ready to c oss Tripoli and seize UairoJ when so ordered.
