WELLINGTON COLLEGE RESERVES CONFIRMATION BILL.
The Council went into committee on this Bill. ; On clause 2, Hon. Mr McLean pointed oat the injustice *of taking land m rising towiw for endowment purposes. There was plenty of land m the country which might be used for endowments. He hoped that the hon. gentleman who had charge of the Bill wonld amend the clause. Hon. Mr Watevhouse thought that the Bill should be gone on with as it stood, more especially as the matter had been l>efora the country for five weeks past. He certainly did object to refeerres m towns being set aside for endowments, but he thought that a general measure should be hroHght down dealing with these reserves, hut i the Bill befpro the committee should be allowed to pass, and the respon- ; subilityof rejecting it should be allowed i to rest on its objectors m another place* . , Hon. Mr McLean considered it a great pity that those gentlemen who had come down from Piilmeraton North to object to the Bill had not been heard. However, he should not offer further opposition. The clause was agreed to as printed. Two verbal amendments . were agreed to m the schedule, and oue or two unimportant amendments m! the I preamble, and the. Bill was reported vith amendments; The third reading was made an order of the day for Tuesday next. '
