The Awahuri Bridge.
(to the editor of the standard.) : Sir, I see m last's issue that tho Awahuri bridge has again been' consideiaHly damaged, also that "th£ Road Board have applied for £740 for Ihe purpose of making said bridge : peo j nianently safe. I do not know m what way it is proposed to be done; but m my opinion neither concrete approaches, groins, dolphius, or additional spans will attain this cud, without the' proper course is adopted, and that is to deal with the river some distance abbve 'the bri gej otherwise before the decides - toworkbnek to the north side it may bo found necessary to ' put perhaps half a dozen more spans on the north side. It is easy, enough almost to make any river keep a course' m whatever direction required at a very small cost m proportion to the • •enetit attained; and until the river has bewi diverted from the north bank we may always expect to hear of similai reports as were m your last -night's issue. If this were done, the bet) of the stream would cover a largei : urea fltaii at present, and the flood would not have no great a force as it has now, andhot no likely to scour. Hoping that what 1 have* Said my prove of .some value m removing, the misfortune referred; to,also that [ have not trespassed too much ou youv valuable space.— l am, &c, E. Larcomb. Palmerston North, October 14th, .1884.
