The Codlin Moth.

The " destruction " at A uckland of the consignment of apples from San Francisco by the last mail steamer appears to have resulted m as wide, ifnotawider dissemination of the codlin moth than a disposal of the apples m the ordinary way of trade ■would have done. The Herald says the cases were carted to a piece of reclamation and the apples there thrown out of the cases. The news spread, a great crowd of men and children collected, and a great scramble for the fruit took place. The police were powerless to stop them, and even the drays were boarded and robbed of their contents while oh the way, The scene was one of indescribable confusion, and after it had lasted two hours the Customs authorities decided to stop operations. The result was anything but what was intended, for the grub was found m various parts of the city, safely encased m the papers the apples were wrapped m. Children and men carried the apples away, and cared not ' where they threw the papers so long as they got the fruit.
