Native News.

The death is announced of Heremia, one of the principal chiefs of the Mokau Country. He is related to Te Wetere, and, though not so shrewd as the "hero" of White Cliffs, he possessed far greater tribal influence. Heremia was a thorough-going savage of the old school—very hospitable, but extremely inconsistent. He viewed with considerable disfavor (says the Auckland Star) the opening of the coal mines on the Mokau, and occasionally, when the humor seized him, he would man his canoe, paddle down to the mines, and throw the newly-dug coal into the river. A big tangi is now being held on his remains, Wells' "History of Taranaki " mentions Heremia as having been one of the White Cliffs murderers, but this is generally denied by the natives ; and Heremia himself informed the writer that he was not a member of the war party on that occasion, though he was present at the preparatory incantation.
