Tho Cardinal Vicar, by order of the Pope, has, m regard to public health, issued a dispensation from fasting duringthe whole time the cholera epidemic lasts. So says that good fanner, J . B. Porter, of Stow, Mnss., m that good paper, the N.E. Farmer. A sprey of chloride of methyl is said to be a sure cure for sciatica., It should 1 be directed along the limb affected, along the course of the sciatica nerve and its branches. The effect is not so painful as when the hot iron is used (as m ordinary treatment), and the curative results are stated to be instaneous. It is welNknown that many " swells"; have fallen -from their high estate to the' pilotage of the London Gondola. On, the cabstand 8 of the great metropolis: there are, 'it; is said, officers enough to have led the Soudan expedition, doc-, tors enough to keep half-a-dozen graveyarda constantly yawning, lawyers more than it would need to set a continent at logger heads. Speaking of the removal of police inspectors the Wellington Pgst remarks : — {,* The periodical removal* of the Chief .Officers of Police are undoubtedly lioneficial m an official public point of (view. The curious thing about these ■re,woyaJs is that Dunedin appears the .only pjaca where the Inspector of Police .is an absolujte #3f ture." The Claimant gave the date of her arrival as July 24t!i m that year. Ospruys anywhere else, or at any time, can have no connection witii the Tichborne case. His health has been very poor for soino time past, and his medical advisers have recommended a change of climate. Bay is said to be worth fully £20,000. A correspondent writing from Marton to the Post makes a mis-statement to the effect that a " train leaves Wanganui for Foxton and vice verd each moining calling at all intermediate townships. It is scarcely credible, but neither of these carry a mail, the .only service being thatr m the evening both ways." The inor.n : ing train from Wanganui to Fo'kton does carry a mail and there is no morning! train from Foxton to Wanganui, as thai train only goes so far as Feilding, and it also' takes a mail from Palrriorston to Foilding. The early train from Palmeis ton also takes a mail to Wanganui. The Woodville Dairy Factory will be Opened on Monday next. A mpstextraordinary instance m which a married woman, served her husband with a summons for debt cropped up last week m the Wellington Magistrate's Court. The defendant did not appear, but the summons was returned with the endorsement that the summons had been served by the defendant's wife. Mr Wardell, R.M., of course accepted the service as correct. The Patea Mail with untimely levity thus records a berious accident. : — A very painful accident happened to Mr William Kraack, a well-known settler. It happened while he was felling bush on Wednesday, and while chopping a large treeit suddenly cracked and gave Kiaack a crack on the shoulder that cracked it out of joint. He was brought into Dr Crofjt who found Unnecessary *° place, the patient under ctyt* 0 * 0 * 1 * before the ' injury-coum be reduced. The residents of Hawera and the neighbourhood are getting a new track cut to the summit of Mount Egmont. An attempt was made to take advantage of the preseuce of Government surveyors on the Iron Sand Block to get the work uoue at Government expense, but it did not succeed. The formation on the proposed line is hard rock, which is a great improvement on the loose scoria of the old track. The new line will be finished m time for use this season, and the more easy access will probably induce a large 1 number of excursionists to try the ascent. It is believed that £40 would cover the cost of a good liurse-track, three-quarters of the way up the mountain, biit the money would have to be subscribed. „, -- ""'"■ It isstateVU^^^j* 11 ** Her f d that jAJ^ eraser will probably proceed to Sydney with the s.s. The survey of the first section of the Main Trunk Railway line (says the Auckland Herald) has been commenced m earnest, Mr Holmes and party taking the first five miles, Mr Hursthouse and party the second, and Mr Rochfort and party the third five miles, so that the survey will be completed by Christinas. Tho same expeditious system will be used iv his office as m the field, and advertisements be issued early for the tenders, so that no time will be lost. It is said thai Mr 'sd ward Wakefield," M.H.K., who is about to Beyer his connection with the Timaru Herald, has been appointed to the editorial chair of the Qlngo Daily Times. The Examiner regrets to hear that there i$ some talk of opposition at Ashurst t,o the scheme for raising money under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act for the erection of the bridge at the Lower Ferry. We have I blamed M»naw at v people m the past for their apathy m regard to this bridge, j and now when the work is on the verge of being carried out, it is to be hoped they will now show a little generosity.
