GORDON'S FOREBODING.
On December 14 a letter was received by one of his friends m Cairo from General Gordon, saying : — " Farewell, you will never hear from me again. • I fear that there will be treachery m the garrison, and all will be over by Christmas." It was this melancholy warning that led Lord Wolseley to order the dash across the desert.- Of the origin of his foreboding nothing is known.
