The Gorman Governmmt are protesting against Spain sending men of- war to occupy Uap, one oil the Caroline Islands. The German re- ; presentatives arc also making efforts to J reduce the rates to India and Australia, which promise to be successful. The German Government are making offers to examine the Spanish claims to the Caroline Islands, and it is expected that the matter will be referred to orbit- ■ ration. Sir Harry St. George Ord, G.C.M.G., has died suddenly m Germany. In 1877 he was Governor of Western Australia, but retired towards the end of 1879. A land corporation of Western Australia, with a capital of £100,000, has been registered. It is expected that the South Australian Government will be obliged to reduce the telegraphic charges on the Port, I Darwin line by la to the public, and Press messages by 4d. The companies interested fear that the reduced rate will cause a reduction m their income of one fourth. The Avheat market is languid, and owners arc -toring, awaiting better times. Latest quotations are— Ex warehouse, 35s 6d ; ex ship, 35s ; latest off coast cargoes, 34s ; forward slupments are unsaleable. The weather is very stormy.
