Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY). The Oldest Daily newspaper on the West Coast. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1885. A TIMELY SUGGESTION .
A contributor to a northern exchange makes the following appropriate remarks : — While we were all talking about immigration, and making up our minds to spend large sums to bring people out to the colony, it would be well to consider whether it would not be as well to keep the people we have. We may depend upon it that, whatever we may say about the benefit of importing people with capital, we will ! never grt any colonists so good as those we are likely to lose by accumulating on the country a load of debt and taxation. A Dunedin paper tells about a man who has written from Melbourne. He says that almost every other man he meets is an old Dunedin citizen, and the joke amongst them is, that they expect by-and-bye to hear of the Octagon and Princes-street sailing up Hobson's Bay on a raft! it is all right to look after and promote immigration, but don't let us shut our eyes to the fact that we. must take some means to make the colony a desirable place of residence for those who have come here.
