The Manawatu vo -operative Steam Shipping Company's screw steamer Jane Douglas, Captain Fraser, is announced to leave Foxton for Wellington, today, at 10 p.m.
At a meeting of panshoners of St. James' Church, Lower Hutt, last night, called ostensibly for the purpose .-, of considering the finances of the parish, but m reality to call upon the Rev. Mr Cross, the incumbent, to resign, the latter ; being.in the chair refused to put the resolution calling upon himself. to resign as being out of order. He also refused to put a modified resolution as lie had no intention to resign. The meeting broke up without any result. A deputation representing the commercial interests waited on the Minister of Justice yesterday stating that the stoppage of Mount Cook Prison was not the popular wish of Wellington. The Minister said the matter was of serious moment and would not be definitely settled until a full meeting of the Cabinet. The Manawatu County Council will meet to morrow at the Council Chambeis Foxton. ; < I Thirty-oight cases of apples, ex the Waihora and a number by the Tekapo, have been seized at Wellington, being affected with codhn moth. At the B.M. Court yesterday the owners of the small steamers, Gordon and Mohaka, were charged with carrying more passengers than licensed while plying to H. M.S. Nelson on Sunday, The Gordon on two charges was fined 50s and £5 respectively and 2s a head for every additional passonger. The total amount was about .£75 The Mohaka was fined £5 on each chargo nnd 2s per head overcarried. The amount was. about £)5. At the Wellington R,M. Court yesterday afternoon Fiank McDowell was charged with embezzling £94 0s Jld, the moneys of Jauies McDowell. Accused had been employed by the plaintiff m the disposal of soft goods, .and it is alleged that he neglected to account for the above mentioned sum, which had been paid him. Th« principal evidence for the prosecution was taken, and the case further adjourned until Tuesday next.
The Customs returns for the colony for the last month are almost complete, only small returns from Patea and Tauranga have yet to como m. At present the total is £11.8,817, as compared against £113,380 for the proceeding month while for the corresponding month of last year the total was £126,362.

Resolved, " That the Chairman write to Mussrs Wicksteed and Novako asking them to allow this committee to nominate them as candidates for the seats on the Wanganui Education Board.'' Subsequently Dr Rockstrow and Mr Baker resigned their scats on the Committee. Mr Bromley, owner of. the horse Rambler has notified the Secretary that he intends suing the Foxton Racing Club for the value of the stakes m the Maiden Plato. Tho locomotive ran along the Central Railway yesterday for a distance of more than three miles, to the ballast pit on Mr C- J. Harrison's property. The, trial trip was a most successful one. About fifty men are now employed m ballasting operations, and the number will be increased to eighty m a few days. — Murtoti paper. The Wanganui Borough Council has passed a resolution to the effect that correct files of the local newspapers be kept m the Council office. Mr Greenwood's next visit to Palmerstou will be held on Thursday, 18th inst, his consulting rooms being at tho Commercial Hotel. During this forenoon a slight shower fell, and there are indications that rain is not far distant. The atmosphere, was very oppressive. It is probable that Aramoho will bo selected as the site for the next meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association. At a meeting of the Wellington Star Boating Club last night a rtsolutiou to the effect that it is desirable to define lt amateur " as one who had not rowed for money himsblf uor made any pecuniary profit from prize money, was, carried. It was also decided to ask the clubs m other parts of the colony to , apeept the resolution. The Government Insurance Association, have, it it understood, cancelled the proposal for a valuer for the wholo ,of the colony, and consequently up ap pointinent will be made from the applications sent m. The suicide m the Woodville lock-up appears to haye put the people there a bit " off colour." Two versions of the "tragedy" were wired to us this morning. Possibly the sun is hot m Woodyille to-day. Advices are to hand stating that the ship Claribel, which left Auckland for New York on the 19th September, has put into the Bermudas m a leaky condition. The vessel had encountered heavy weather, and was partially dismasted. She had also lost a quantity of her spars, sails, and rigging. A portion of the cargo is being discharged prior to refitting. : Mr E. Tudor Atkinson, solicitor, has .beeii elected first lieutenant of "the Pal inerston Rifle Velunteer Corps, which company is rapidly increasing m strength. The following tenders were accepted at the meeting of the : Manawatu Road Board held to-day : — D. Pringle's tender tor dog collars was accepted ; that of W. Chamberlain £22 lls for collecting Do£f Tax. Kasapar Setter £23 17s for Kairanga main| drain contract No. 3. P. Cavanagh £3r> 5s forming and metalling 23£ chains Staces Road. Mr C. B. Izard is about to ratire from the firm of Izard and Bell, and Mr H. Gully and Mr C. H. Izard will join Mr H. D. Bell. Mr C. B. Izard intends to cease the practice of his prof ession.-r \ Fosl. . The Shamrock Hotel, Wellington, narrowly escaped being wrecked by an explosion of gas a few mornings ago. It is rumored that Mr E. C. Wakefield, M. 11. R., is thinking of contesting the Waitotara seat at next election. Messrs O'Connor and Mowbray, storekeepers, have dissolved partnership, as notified elsewhere. Mr O'Connor con- , tinning to carrying on the business. We understand that t\e Mayor has invited the members of the Fire Brigade J and some other friends to a friendly ] I gathering at the Commercial Hotel on Monday evening. . The object is to show recognition of the energy and promptitude displayed by the Brigade during several occasions of late when their servisfis were called into requisition.
