A Sad Story.
The Sydney Globe of the 24th April says : — " A most painful incident occurred last night at the local police station. A poor young fellow, Mr ?erey Greg, was brought to the lockup on a stretcher, having been picked up at Hexham speechless, a few hours before. For some minutes he attempted to say something, but continued grasps of coughing prevented him. He, pointe Ito his pockets, and on opening letters found m them the sergeant found one containing the addresses of j<onie friends m Newcastle, who should be summoned m case of his serious illness. One ran thus: — ' I write this iv case of any sudden illness or death on the road. I am reported by the doctors to be m tbe last stages of consumption. 1 believe my | life hopeless. My relatives are all m England. I have been working m a lawyer's office, but Itecame too ill to continue there. The only chance offered me i* to end my life m some Beuevolent Asylum or to risk my few remaining days by exposure m travelling. I prefer the hitter. lam just 21 years of age. Percy Albert Greg.' Rhe poor fellow bears marks of good breeding, and has left some very mournful description of his miseries m versa. He was supplied with restoratives and conveyed to tbe Benevolent Asylum, that being the only place available for such cases m the district, the Newcastle Hospital declining to receive incurable cuses."
