The Late Thomas Henderson M.L.C.
One of the eurlipst and most eaterprising pipncerß of New Zealand terminated a useful nnd honorable career early on Sunduy morning, m the person of Thomas Maxwell HunderßOD, M.L.C. Th(j deceased gentleman was attacked with paralysis on Saturday week at the residence of Mr G. S. Gmham, Fitzherbert terrace, with whom ho was staying as a guest, and never recovered from the shock. He was about 77 years of age, nnd seemed f (illy to anticipate the result of his illness, expressing some time bofore the end approaclied a desire that he might be biiried'in Auckland, flnd that | instead of the customary pnll hcinjj.used ! the flap: of the old Circular Saw Cotn- • pßiiy's line of vesßsls, of which he was J one of the proprietors, might.be employed to cover the coffin, .We under- , stand that the deceased's wishes will be' carried out, and that his remains will be. . conveyed to Auckland by the earliest opportunity .either by the Hinemoa or special steamer. The deceased £«ntleman was born m Mfixwelltown,\Dwn<k»e, and emigrated to this Colony m 1840. After a sojourn at Welliogton and th'e Bay of Islands, he finnlly 'settled m Auckland, where he devoted his energy and capital to the development of many ..- enterprises, the forfino&t nmong them hein<r the Bank of New Zealand and the Colonial Insurance Company. He afterwards, m conjunction with Mr T. Macfarlane, started .what turned out to be a vf-ry large saw-rnillin^r husineso in' the Waitpmata district, and which was subsequently widely known as Henderson's. Mill, at present the site of a thriving township. He was also connected with the several lines of sailing and steam vessels, and look a prominent part m, politics, being a member of the first' General Assembly which sat m -Auck--< Jand. .Known far and wide throughout the Colony, he was greatly esteemea for his excellent qualities as a man, and respected for his business capacity and enterprise as a colonist of the highest type. During recent years lie held a seat m the Legislative Council.— Wellington paper. '
