ASHURST

(From our own Correspondent.) A meeting of the Chess and Draughts Comm ttee was held in the Club s room last evening. Present—Messrs Rumble (President), Vincent (secretary), Clarke (treasurer), Hutchings Porthouse,Sanders, and Freeman. Mr David Orr was elected a member of the club. The secretary and Treasurer reported upon the interview they had with Mr Gallichan re certain amendments to his suggestion re points prizes. It was propo ed by Mr Hutchings, seconded by Mr Clarke and carried, That Mr Gallichan's suggestion be adopted. Proposed by Mr Vincent, seconded by Mr Clarke and c rried, That games played to-night count for the po nts prizes. Mrs Tilsley took possession of the Commercial Hotel last evening.

A meeting of the W.C.T.U. to naugurate a branch at was held in the Wesleyan Church yesterday afternoon. Some thirteen ladies handed in their names as members. The following officers were elected :—Mrs Crichton (President), Mrs Hutchings and Miss Law (Vice-Pre-sidents), Miss Scott (Treasurer), Mis Clarke (Secretary), Mrs Andrew (Correspondent). A very successful meeting was held in the Salvation Army Barracks in the evening.
