LETTER TO THE EDITOR NEW ZEALAND HERALD.
The following letter, addressed to tho
editor of the New Zealand Herald, was also received yesterday. We have already heard by cable of the seizure of a mail, containing a large amount of General Baden-Powell's correspondence, so that many who have written to him may be disappointed in not reeoiving answers :—
" Warm Baths, Trausvaal, " August, 1900. " Dear Sir, —I bog to thank you for your kind thought in sending uiq the very interesting number o£ your paper which describes the kindly sympathy expressed by your country a^; the news of our relief in Mafeking.
"I have also received a very large number of letters and cables from wellwishers in the colony, which I am endeavouring to answer; but as many mails for me, as well as from me, have been captured by the enemy, I fear that a number of kind sympathisers will have thought me wanting in courtesy and gratitude iv not writing to them. I trust that you may bo inclined thorefore to help me make known to them the reason for my apparent neglect, as I have been most anxious to express my heartfelt gratitude, and that of the garrison of Mafeking, for all the generous good feeling displayed towards us.
" I remain, "Yours, very truly, " R.&. S. Baden-Powell, " Major-General."
