The ground was dry , and the weather fine. . Early in the game France failed to take advantage of a free kick against tlie Maoris for obstruction. The Maoris resumed the attack, Phillips dropping a brilliant goal. Villa replied with a try, which was not converted. Jaurreguy, who was a pillar of strength to the French team, narrowly • missed putting the Frenchmen ahead. Pelham scored an unconverted try for the Maoris, whose defence kept out the vigorous French attacks. Jaurreguy ran brilliantly, but was pulled down. Tho half-tin* score was: Maoris 7, France 3.
In the second spell the general weakness of the French defence enabled Falwasser to score a try after a brilliant run, which Jaurreguy almost stopped. The tourists again attacked, and despite Dumanoir’s fine defence, added a third unconverted try, winning the game through fast running and speedy breaking up. Phillips was the outstanding player amongst the visitors, and France’s best were Jaurreguy, Dumanoir and Graciet. —A. and N.Z. cable.
