NEW HOTEL
PLANS BEFORE LICENSING
COMMITTEE
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
At the quarterly meeting to-day of the Palmerston Licensing Committee plans were submitted by Mr Oram for the erection of a new hotel in Cuba street to take over the Clarendon Hotel license. After considering the plans tho chairman (Mr J. L. Stout, S.M.) stated that the committee could not approve of them because of the fact that it was intended to provide lesser accommodation than at the present hotel. Further, the committee saw no reason why another hotel should be built in the neighbourhood of Main street. Mr Oram mentioned that the plans provided for walls of sufficient strength to enable a third storey to be added at any time. Tho chairman: Palmerston North is a growing town, and we can’t allow little hotels to grow up. More accommodation, he added, would have to be provided if the plans were to he approved. Mr Oram: There are rooms in the present building that are not used. Mr Stout: The committee will consider nothing with less accommodation than the present Clarendon Hotel. Moreover, we noticed in the plans that some of the bedrooms were the size of a box.
Mr Oram said that he would report to his principals.
