UNUSUAL CHARGE.
APPRENTICES’ CONTRACT,
FAILURE TO REGISTER.
On the information of Mr J. Lowdcn, inspector of awards at Palmerston North, the Borough Council was charged at the Magistrate’s Court this morning that, being a party bound by the electrical workers’ award, it did, on or about August 20, 1924, fail to register within 28 days a contract of service in respect of two apprentices. Mr Cooke, for the borough, stated that the breach was purely a technical one. There was no question about the boys not having been properly paid; the borough had given them. 30s a week wages, whereas the award was £l. The cases, counsel understood, wore the first of their kind in the Dominion. Mr Lowden did not press for a heavy penalty. The cases,. he mentioned, were not the first in the Dominion, but were the first in Palmerston North.
A fine of £1 was imposed in respect of each of the breaches •/ the magistrate, Mr J. L. Stout.
