DRAINAGE WORK.

MEETING OF MANAWATU BOARD Trustee P. J. Small presided over the usual monthly meeting of the Manawatu Drainage Board to-day, others present being Trustees E. Wood, E. W. Collins, A. Guy, M. A. Eliott, R. Tanner and J. Collis. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr J. A. Russell pointing cut that the stop-bank on the Mangaone stream on section 423 was being cut into very badly.—Received, the matter being left to the engineer to deal with. From the board’s solicitor stating that, in his opinion, the board would not be justified in lodging a caveat in connection with the outlet of the Mangaone stream as the only person who could do so was one who claimed an interest in the land. The boaru had no interest in the land, and he understood it had not so far taken over the control or the management of the lagoon or outlet. The board, however, had ample power under the Land Drainage Act, 1908, to deepen, widen and straighten any outfall for water beyond its district without taking land.—Received, the matter being held over. OVERSEER’S REPORT.

The overseer (Mr W. J. Coman) reported that, during the month, 11 chains of the Mangaone stream in Mr Devine’s property had been battered .at a cost of approximately £3 8s per chain; also 5f chains of the same stream had been similarly dealt with elsewhere at a cost of £7 4s per chain. Four men had been employed clearing logs and timber from Lovelock’s bridge, the work costing £2 14s. Slips in No. 1 Line drain had cost £1 7s to remove. —The report was adopted. GENERAL. Mr Hamlin waited on the board with a request that the outlet of a drain on Gillespie’s Line be attended to. Mr Max Voss also waited on '.he meeting in regard to Fell’s bridge.— The chairman said that an inspection would be made and, if any alteration to the bridge was necessary, Mr Voss would be advised of the fact. / Both matters were left to the engineer to deal with. On the motion of Trustee Eliott, the engineer was instructed to report on the Mangaone, No. 1 and Burke’s drains with a view to ascertaining the cost of putting them thoroughly in order.
